No fewer than 13 individuals killed and 98 injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's major public works projects.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The development of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an accelerated speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital undertakings.
